If you wish to preserve the Tridentine Mass at St. Mary’s, please follow these Recommended Guidelines when writing to the Bishop - Time is of the Essence!

1.      Address the Bishop as Your Excellency or Dear Excellency.

2.      Keep the letter’s tone positive and respectful.

3.      Express gratitude for having the Mass for the length of time we have had it.

4.      Ask the Bishop to continue the Mass after Fr. Johnson’s retirement to be celebrated on Sundays and all Holy days according to the 1962 calendar.

5.      Consider asking him to permit the celebration of the other sacraments (baptisms, weddings, funerals) in their traditional form and to permit the celebration of daily Mass.

6.      Do not refer to the Mass solely as the Latin Mass - it must be called the Tridentine Mass to avoid confusion with the Novus Ordo in Latin.

7.      Do not attack the Novus Ordo or question its validity.

8.      Relate how holy and wonderful the Tridentine Mass is and how it has affected your life.

9.      Mention how your faith and that of family members have grown as a result of attending the Tridentine Mass regularly.

10. Mention the range in ages, especially young families, and the diversity of nationality and race of those attending the Mass.

11. Mention that assisting at an Indult Tridentine Mass allows the faithful to have their rightful aspirations met, without having to attend other non-indult Latin Tridentine Masses.

12. Make mention of the Bishop’s authority and your obedience to him as Christ’s shepherd.

13. Try to use words like diverse, Christ-centered, community, collaborative, unified, and pastoral.

14. You may wish to mention the Bishop’s charity towards other members of the Diocese of Orange’s diverse Catholic community (Hispanic, Polish, Vietnamese, Korean, Charismatic, and Youth Masses); as well as his charity towards our Jewish, Muslim, and our other Protestant brothers and sisters via ecumenical and inter-religious dialogue.

15. Keep the letter to one page only – adjust line spacing, font, margins etc. as necessary. Page two is rarely if ever read.

16. Check punctuation, spelling and grammar!!!!

17. Have another person read the letter before you send it to check for clarity, errors, run on sentences or negativity, and edit accordingly.

18. Compose and send your letter as soon as possible !

19. Contact us if you have any questions:     (562) 691-5246      viceprez2@uvoc.org or secretary@uvoc.org
